Venice Doorway Watercolor Painting Tutorial First, I sketch out the painting.

Sketch lightly - pencil doesn't always erase. I've increased the contrast in my photo so you can see the lines.
Venice Doorway Watercolor Painting Lesson 2 A quick first layer gives me a strong dark in the upper left and lower right. That keeps me from getting too dark everywhere.

Just let your brush dance around the painting.

I let this dry completely.
Venice Doorway Painting Tutorial 3 Using the same colors, I keep moving around the painting. I want to make sure I keep that golden glow on the stucco.
Venice Doorway Painting Tutorial 4 Sharpening a few places up, keeping moving. A nice deep reflecting shadow under the balcony.

Final Painting! I used some white gouche, but also azo yellow for the highlights in the door ironwork.
